According to reports in the Daily Mail, West Ham United manager David Moyes watched Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton target James Maddison, rated at £20m according to the Evening Standard, in action for Norwich City in their FA Cup third round replay tie at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.

What's the word, then?

Well, the Irons boss was spotted in the crowd at the Bridge, with many correctly assuming that he was there to watch Blues striker Michy Batshuayi, which the Daily Mail confirms.

However, the Daily Mail also adds that the Scottish manager was scouting attacking midfielder Maddison too, with the highly-rated 21-year-old also a target for their Premier League rivals Spurs and Saints according to reports in The Mirror on January 11.

How has Maddison done this season?

He has been excellent.

Usually playing in the No 10 role for the Canaries, the England U21 international has scored eight goals and provided a further eight assists in 30 appearances in all competitions for the Championship club.

According to WhoScored.com, two of his main strengths are his ability to make key passes and his dribbling, and he has made 70 of the former in 25 league games this term, while he has successfully completed 50 of the 75 take-ons he has attempted.

Would he be a good signing for West Ham?

He certainly would be.

The 21-year-old is a creative player in the middle of the park and aside from Manuel Lanzini, the Irons don't really have anyone similar.

Maddison has shown that he is not only capable of seeing through-balls that other perhaps wouldn't see, but he can also find the net on a regular basis too.

He certainly has plenty of time to develop and improve even further, and he could prove to be a bargain £20m buy – in the long-term at least.

Will they go for him this month?

The fact that Norwich have already sold Alex Pritchard to Huddersfield for £11m during the January window means they are determined not to lose Maddison.

While £20m could be too much for West Ham, they should seriously think about investing the fee given the quality the 21-year-old has, and they could even tempt the Canaries into selling by offering to loan the attacking midfielder back to them for the rest of the campaign.
