Jack Wilshere is one of the West Ham stars taking a leading role in the club’s latest movement aimed at delivering a sporting legacy.

The Players’ Project was unveiled last week with the Hammers calling it the most ambitious and integrated community programme ever created by a Premier League club.

It is targeted at changing the lives of people living in the London Borough of Newham, the surrounding Olympic boroughs and Essex.

It will see the Irons commit £10million over the next three years, aimed at making a difference through providing a mentor to younger members of the community, helping break down barriers that east Londoners face looking for employment, or tackling loneliness.

Summer addition Wilshere, who is currently injured much to the frustration of Hammers fans on Twitter, recently told the club’s official website why he feels it is important to play a role in The Players’ Project, joining the likes of Marko Arnautovic and women’s team members Lucienne Reichardt and Esmee De Graaf.

“I think The Players’ Project is very important because us as footballers, and the club, have a responsibility to the community,” said Wilshere.

“In the community, we’re here a lot. We attract big crowds, kids, and all kinds of people, so if we can help to give them a better life, or a better opportunity in their lives, then us as players, we’re excited to do that.”
