Reports claim Gary Cahill could leave Chelsea in January in search of regular playing time, and West Ham should absolutely be at the front of the queue.

What's the story?

According to reports, Cahill is ready to force a move away from Stamford Bridge if he does not get more playing time.

The 61-cap England international has not featured for Chelsea this season, as Maurizio Sarri has opted for Antonio Rudiger and David Luiz in the heart of defence.

The presence of youngster Andreas Christensen means Cahill’s time at Chelsea is surely coming to an end, and West Ham would be wise to try their luck with a January bid.

The Hammers have revamped the heart of their defence this summer, and Cahill’s leadership and experience could prove vital in developing that new core.

The perfect signing for Diop and Balbuena?

While Manuel Pellegrini’s main purpose was to bring attractive, free-flowing football to the London Stadium, he also tried to improve the spine of the team this summer, most notably with a £22m move for Issa Diop and a bargain swoop for Fabian Balbuena.

After an error in his debut against Arsenal, Diop has shown some really promising signs, but both he and Babuena are still settling. Cahill’s Premier League experience could help both of the new Hammers and also Declan Rice, who may feature as a centre back if injuries mount up.

The 32 year-old may not have a place at Chelsea anymore, but he is a better passer than Diop or Balbuena, which would help implement Pellegrini’s style. He boasted an 89 per cent pass completion rate in the league last season.

First and foremost though he is a no nonsense defender, winning over three aerial duels per game last season while making 1.1 tackles, one interception and 4.6 clearances per game.

Diop and Balbuena may well be the partnership of the future at West Ham, but relying on a 21 year-old and a player who has never played in Europe before is a huge risk, so offering Cahill a short-term deal is really a no brainer.
