As reported by Portuguese outlet O Jogo, West Ham United have sent scouts to check on the progress of Benfica striker Raul Jimenez.

What's the story?

After a disappointing transitional season at the London Stadium, fans are hoping the club can show they have a strategy for this summer's transfer window and have the ambition that can ensure they compete in the top half of the English Premier League table.

One player the club are looking at is Mexican international Raul Jimenez.

That's according to O Jogo, who say scouts were in attendance at Benfica's recent match with Porto to track the forward after impressive recent form for the Portuguese giants.

Who is he?

Mainly on the fringes of the Benfica first team this season, Jimenez has nonetheless provided an impressive contribution at the club, scoring six top-flight goals and creating six assists despite starting just three of his 29 league appearances.

That's part of a 31 goal total in 116 career appearances in Portugal, showing he can provide goals on a consistent basis despite limited opportunities and performing more of a target man role at the club.

Strong in the air, holding the ball and supporting teammates around him, the 6ft 2in striker has the physical presence to be a success in the Premier League and could be a perfect alternative striking option for West Ham next season.

Rated at £9m by Transfermarkt and currently not starting on a regular basis in Portugal, he may not cost the world either, making him an even more attractive target this summer.
