Recently, the question marks over Joe Hart seem to have turned into full-on proclamations of his demise.

The West Ham goalkeeper is on loan at the east London club this season after a turbulent loan spell in Italy last season as his parent club Manchester City don’t seem to see any need for his services.

It’s easy to see why: last year it was obvious that Hart’s ability with his feet was always going to be his downfall, this year he’s had problems with his hands in terms of shot-stopping, too. That was rarely in question when Guardiola took over, but now it’s become a problem.

So much so that the four-time Premier League Golden Glove winner now risks losing his place as first-choice England goalkeeper to Jack Butland of Stoke or Jordan Pickford of Everton - clubs who have both conceded 22 goals so far this season. The problem is, Hart’s West Ham have conceded 23.

On Tuesday night against Brazil, though, Hart did indeed play in goal. He made three saves and kept a clean sheet against a side with Philippe Coutinho, Gabriel Jesus and Neymar for a front three.

And yet, whatever you think of Hart’s shot-stopping, that’s not what stood out as a positive: last night, even despite having more touches than all but four other England players, his pass accuracy of 49% was the lowest of any of the players on the pitch by quite some distance. Indeed, his opposite number in the Brazil goal, Allison, succeeded with 89% of his passes.

That’s not necessarily Hart’s game, of course, but it’s why his distinguished Manchester City career ended so abruptly and so traumatically. And, indeed, if England are to play in such a way that the goalkeeper is going to have more touches than most of his teammates, it might be a good thing if he didn’t also waste more than half of them.

The arrival of David Moyes might see Hart get better protection in front of him than he had under Slaven Bilic, as West Ham might start to solidify themselves defensively. But whatever happens, it’s clear that Hart’s place in a team that attempts to play possession football out from the back should be in jeopardy - even when he’s on form.

It’s good news for West Ham that their goalkeeper appears to be coming into better form than he was in at the start of the season, but his limitations are showing up as clear as ever.
