West Ham United goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski should be available in a couple of weeks, as reported by the club's official channels.

What's the story?

The stopper was forced off after just 13 minutes of the Hammers' 1-0 loss against Sheffield United, after taking a goal kick.

This may have caused concern among some fans, due to the fact that his last lay-off saw him unavailable for 11 Premier League matches. During that time, Roberto came in and made a number of high profile errors.

Speaking about the injury, West Ham's Head of Medical, Richard Collinge, said: “It is good news in the sense that Lukasz hasn’t aggravated or suffered any recurrence of the previous injury.

“The scan has shown some slight inflammation and irritation of scar tissue, which is quite common after surgery, and obviously the source of the discomfort he felt on Friday.

“We now just need to let the inflammation settle down and expect Lukasz to be available again within a couple of weeks.”

Avoiding a toxic cycle

While there will be anticipation to get such a key man back between the sticks, after he won Hammer of the Year last season, David Moyes must be careful with Fabianski.

It will be frustrating to have him out of action, especially if a new goalkeeper has not been signed, but the Poland international needs to be protected from a toxic cycle of sustaining injuries.

The comment suggests that the discomfort felt at Bramall Lane is a result of swelling linked to the previous surgery that he had to undergo.

This is why it is vital that he is given the time to fully recover before stepping back onto the pitch to ensure that it doesn't happen again in the near future.

Looking at the rest of the season, Fabianski can play an integral role for West Ham, but he has to be given the time to make sure that he is injury-free first. After being named the Player of the Season last term, he could prove key to promotion. That will only happen if he regains full fitness, however.

Meanwhile, West Ham fans were shocked by a quote from Moyes.
