West Ham United may have been handed a transfer boost after learning that their target from the summer Gary Cahill can leave Chelsea on loan before his contract expires next year, per reports in The Telegraph.

What’s the word?

Cahill’s contract at Stamford Bridge has just eight months to run and will bring an end to a seven-year stint in south-west London after the former England international joined from Wigan in 2012.

With the Blues, the 32-year-old has recorded 288 appearances and scored 25 times but only one of those outings have come in the Premier League this season as the 6ft 4in centre-back was brought on against the Hammers in September.

Chelsea are now said to be open to the experienced defender leaving the club permanently, and the Telegraph report he will be allowed to move away in January as a gesture of gratitude for his years of service – twice winning the league and securing the Champions League in 2012.

The 61-cap former Three Lions leader is currently valued at £9million by TransferMarkt and it is unclear if the Pensioners will look for a loan fee in any move.

Should West Ham reginite summer interest?

As Manuel Pellegrini continues to favour a partnership of Fabian Balbuena and Issa Diop, it would be unlikely for Cahill to become a regular at the back in east London.

What the defender would bring to West Ham, though, is experience that can only further develop the Frenchman forging an integral role under the Chilean in what is only his first season in England.

Furthermore, Cahill can take 19-year-old academy-ace Reece Oxford under his wing as the teenager struggles to break into the senior side following a loan spell in Germany with Borussia Monchengladbach.

The continued absence of Winston Reid also leaves the Irons with just one senior back-up option to call upon in Angelo Ogbonna, so a new recruit is more than needed at the London Stadium.
