Things didn't end well for Manuel Pellegrini at London Stadium, as he managed just two wins in his final 14 Premier League matches before being sacked.

That record came despite big-money summer signings including Sebastien Haller and Pablo Fornals.

He opened up about one specific recruit when asked if he could explain his sacking, speaking to La Tercera:

"The only explanation is that this is football. I returned to England to a challenge. To West Ham, who usually fights the descent, but which is very large. My intention was to make it grow. We start well; until match seven we had a defeat.

"Unfortunately, we had a major injury, from the goalkeeper (the Polish Fabianski), of four months. And the performance of the second (the Spanish Roberto Jiménez) was not as expected. He had responsibility in several goals. The team was losing confidence, the results were denied and the owners decided to change."

It can be argued that Pellegrini has completely undermined himself and Mario Husillos with this comment, as it was the former Director of Football who brought him into the club, while the Chilean is the man who insisted on continuously playing him.

There is no escaping the fact that Roberto was calamitous in the West Ham goal, as in his eight Premier League games, he conceded 17 strikes without keeping a single clean sheet.

Did he really play for us?! No West Ham fan has managed to name all of these obscure Irons signings....

It is not just the poor numbers that made him so bad though, as the way he conceded those goals was embarrassing. His alarming mistakes included the moment he punched the ball into his own net against Burnley, while his positioning was atrocious for one of Newcastle's goals in their win at London Stadium.

However, Pellegrini doesn't really have a leg to stand on when complaining about the 33-year-old considering he repeatedly played him while David Martin sat on the bench having no say on proceedings.

In addition to that there were other reasons for Pellegrini's failure this season, as Haller was often isolated, Fornals didn't achieve a goal contribution in any of his first 12 league games and the team's play was often pedestrian.

The Chilean's response started by saying "this is football", but what West Ham fans endured for the majority of his last couple of months is exactly what football shouldn't be - gutless, uninspiring and at times verging on pathetic.

Meanwhile, the owners' reputation won't be helped by a recent revelation.
