Maxi Gomez is waiting to see if Tottenham Hotspur want to sign him this summer as he stalls over a move to West Ham United, per the Daily Mirror.

What’s the word?

The Hammers want the Celta Vigo striker this summer.

Football FanCast understands that Mario Husillos, the club’s Director of Football, remains in negotiations with the Spanish club over the prospective signing as Manuel Pellegrini looks to reshape his squad.

However, the Mirror now report that Gomez is waiting to find out if Spurs will target him as they look to find back-up to Harry Kane this summer.

The Hammers remain hopeful of completing a deal, but this update could throw a spanner in the works.

Gomez should surely be seeking out regular first-team football.

He played 36 times in all competitions last season, with 33 league starts. That could more than halve at Spurs.

Fernando Llorente, the back-up to Kane in 2018/19, made just six starts in the Premier League.

A move to Spurs will cut Gomez’s momentum from under him and it makes more sense for him to make a move to the Hammers.

Pellegrini, FFC understands, is keen to secure the striker as a potential starting forward, and game time simply cannot be guaranteed in the same vein in north London.

This, then, feels like a mistake on the forward’s part.
