West ham United were offered the chance to sign Hatem Ben Arfa in the summer after his contract at Paris Saint-Germain expired, according to L'Equipe.

What's the word?

Manuel Pellegrini had a big job on his hands when he took over from David Moyes at the end of last season.

The Chilean, who won two Premier League titles with Manchester City, brought in nine new signings in a bid to improve the team.

So far, though, things have not quite clicked for the East London outfit as they are yet to win a Premier League match.

According to L'Equipe, one of those players could have been Ben Arfa, who was released from PSG at the end of the season.

The report claims that the midfielder's camp offered him to the Hammers, but a move never came to fruition.

Have West Ham missed a trick?

Most Premier League watchers will remember Ben Arfa for being a disruptive figure at Newcastle United.

During his time at the North-East outfit, he was accused of fitness issues and causing problems behind the scenes.

On the pitch, the 31-year-old made 86 appearances, scoring 14 goals and creating 16 assists.

The midfielder seemed to find a new lease of life when he returned to France, but he has since dwindled.

There is nothing to say that Ben Arfa would not succeed at the London Stadium, but it would have been a huge risk.

Given how many new faces have arrived at the club, the last thing needed would be a controversial figure.
