According to reports, West Ham will join the race to sign West Brom defender Jonny Evans this summer and he could be available for as little as £3million.

The Northern Ireland international, valued at £13.3 million by Transfermarkt, reportedly has a £3million release clause if West Brom get relegated, which is looking increasingly likely as Alan Pardew’s side have won just three of their last 37 games.

The 30 year-old was linked with Manchester City, Arsenal and Everton during the winter window and will surely look to jump ship if the Baggies can’t beat the drop. Evans joined the Baggies for around £8million in 2015 and has been a fixture in their backline ever since.

The Hammers have struggled at the back this season, and despite consecutive clean sheets against Chelsea and Arsenal in December Moyes’ side have managed just one clean sheet in their last ten Premier League games. Jose Fonte was brought in last year for some experience and leadership, but was hampered by injuries and never really found form in the team.

Winston Reid has been a fixture at the back for years but has struggled himself this season and taken plenty of flak from fans along the way. James Collins is 34 and Angelo Ogbonna hasn’t exactly fulfilled his potential, leaving Moyes seriously short of first class options at the back.

Evans could prove to be a bargain in the summer as Moyes looks to steer the Irons away from another relegation scrap. Capped 67 times by Northern Ireland, Evans is averaging 1.1 tackles per game, 1.7 interceptions, and an impressive 4.3 clearances in the league this season. He has also pitched in with two goals and an assist, something he has consistently offered from set pieces throughout his career.

There will surely be a queue of clubs lining up to rescue Evans from the Championship this summer if West Brom go down, and with his contract expiring in 2019 it could turn into a bidding war for wages. West Ham need to be at the front of this queue, as the 30-year-old could be the consistent leader the Hammers have lacked this season.
