According to reports in Portugal, long time West Ham target William Carvalho will be up for sale this summer, along with teammate Rui Patricio.

What's the story?

Well respected Portuguese newspaper Jornal de Notícias is reporting that Sporting CP will sell midfielder William Carvalho for €40m this summer, along with goalkeeper Patricio for a further €15m.

Carvalho has been a long time target for West Ham, with the towering midfielder causing a fallout between the two clubs last summer.

West Ham are in desperate need of a new goalkeeper and a new powerhouse in midfield, so the Hammers should absolutely attempt a double summer swoop for the pair.

Heading for the Hammers?

If there are two positions West Ham need to strengthen this summer it’s in goal and in midfield, although the shouts for a new striker are certainly getting louder.

There’s a reason the Hammers have been desperate to sign Carvalho for quite some time, as the 26 year-old seems tailor made for the Premier League.

Across 33 appearances in all competitions this season, the giant defensive midfielder is averaging 1.8 tackles per game, 1.3 clearances and 1.5 aerial wins.

Carvalho has an eye for a pass too, completing 88.5 per cent of his passes this season.

Rui Patricio would be a great addition too, as the Hammers are currently without a reliable goalkeeper with Joe Hart and Adrian both failing to stake a claim on the shirt.

The 30 year-old Portugal international has 16 clean sheets in 32 league games this season, a far better rate than either of the Hammers’ keepers can claim.

If Carvalho and Patricio are really available for a combined €55m (£48m), then the Hammers would be foolish not to re-visit their interest.

The two Portuguese internationals would drastically improve the Hammers first eleven and add to a spine that is sorely lacking.
