It’s been a season of mixed results and mixed feelings for West Ham. Although the ecstasy of their shock 3-0 win at Tottenham has still got fans of the club flying high, too many goalless performances and dropped points are proving to be a genuine cause for concern.
Andy Carroll was Sam Allardyce’s big arrival during the last window, as the London club swooped to sure his permanent arrival from Liverpool on the back of an excellent end to his loan stint, and was hailed as the man who could help the club rise to secure a top half finish and potentially qualify for Europe. However, the pony-tailed hitman has struggled with injury problems, exposing the true lack of depth ‘Big Sam’ has in the final third.
Even emergency signings Mladen Petric – released by Fulham – and Carlton Cole – perhaps foolishly released by West Ham themselves – have been unable to fill the void, leading to the Upton Park club fielding a ‘strikerless’ system on numerous occasions.
In 16th position after 11 games with just nine goals scored, something has to be done in the New Year, and it’s likely that Allardyce will delve into the transfer market in a bid to right the wrongs of the opening months of the campaign. Here are SIX players who could kick-start West Ham’s season.
