New West Ham United manager Manuel Pellegrini has already been busy in the transfer market this summer having boosted his defensive options by signing Ryan Fredericks, Issa Diop and Lukasz Fabianski, but the Chilean won't be finished there.

The former Manchester City boss will be determined to bring in further additions in order to ensure that the east London club are guaranteed a top-half finish minimum in the upcoming season, having flirted with relegation last term with the joint-worst defence in the Premier League – they conceded 68 goals in their 38 top flight fixtures.

The 64-year-old, who has been urged to sign a 25-year-old World Cup attacking ace, will have his targets in mind – with the majority of those likely to be defenders and midfielders with decent strength in depth in attacking areas – but perhaps he should be considering some familiar faces, too.

While the Hammers.have had their fair share of flops over the years, there are some of their ex-stars that could make a big impact for them now, and a return could be a positive outcome for all parties.

Here are three former West Ham players Pellegrini must look to re-sign this summer…

While Pellegrini has already signed Diop to strengthen his central defensive options, he looks likely to bring in another centre-back before the window slams shut on August 9.

With Jose Fonte and James Collins both leaving in recent months, doubts over Winston Reid's fitness and with Declan Rice looking set to move into a midfield position rather than playing as a centre-back, the Chilean certainly needs another body in that area.

West Ham sold Tomkins to Crystal Palace in 2016 after eight years with them, but with the 29-year-old impressing alongside Mamadou Sakho for the Eagles last term as they recovered from a dreadful start to survive relatively comfortably, he could be an inspired addition for the Irons.

With Cheikhou Kouyate and Mark Noble enduring below-par campaigns last time out, one of Pellegrini's other transfer priorities this summer may well be to bring a new central midfielder to the London Stadium, and Diame could be a surprise good option.

The 31-year-old played for West Ham between 2012 and 2014 and at the beginning of the 2017/18 campaign it appeared as though he could be on his way out of Newcastle United having struggled to break into the starting XI.

However, the Frenchman eventually worked his way into the side alongside Jonjo Shelvey and he didn't look back, putting in consistent performance after consistent performance as the Magpies secured a 10th-place finish.

The talented 25-year-old was certainly something of a controversial figure during his time with West Ham, and while he clearly had the talent – as shown by his brilliant solo run and dink against Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane – his questionable attitude often let him down.

The attacking midfielder is currently on loan with Mexican club Atlas from Lazio, with reliable club insider @ExWHUemployee confirming on his latest 'The West Ham Way' transfer blog (June 24) that the Serie A giants want to include him in a deal for Irons target Felipe Anderson.

While Morrison's career hasn't gone as well as it once looked as though it would, there is no doubting the quality he has in his locker and he could be a great short-term replacement for Manuel Lanzini.
