According to reports in The Mirror, new West Ham United manager David Moyes is ready to make a January move for Bournemouth midfielder Harry Arter as he looks to strengthen his squad.

The Mirror says that the Scot has been given the green light to do whatever he feels is necessary with the side he inherited after being appointed on Tuesday, and that could include shipping out club-record buy Marko Arnautovic as well as targeting deals for Arter, William Carvalho and Lamine Kone.

The Irons are currently in the relegation zone after a disappointing start to the campaign, with heavy home defeats against newly-promoted Brighton and Hove Albion and Liverpool last weekend probably the low points.

However, the fact that Moyes is targeting Arter suggests that the club could be taking a step in the right direction, but he may face a battle to bring him to the London Stadium considering he only signed a new four-year deal with the Cherries in July.

Nevertheless, here are three reasons the 27-year-old would be West Ham's best January signing…

Energy

One of West Ham's big problems this season – and perhaps last term as well – appears to have been the fitness of the players, with many often appearing leggy and lethargic throughout the 90 minutes.

If Moyes is looking to bring more energy into the side in January then trying to sign Arter is the perfect move, as the 27-year-old loves to get around the midfield putting his opponents under pressure.

That is a trait that other players tend to follow and it should mean that the Irons aren't beaten so easily in key areas of the pitch.

He loves to battle

When the going gets tough – as it has done on many occasions throughout the last 15 months – many West Ham players have gone missing rather than standing up and being counted.

That is something that the London Stadium won’t accept and is something that they have already see on far too many occasions.

While someone like Mark Noble will always offer passion because of his affiliation with the club, Arter would strengthen a weak central midfield with his determination and he also loves a tackle – he has won eight this season and 64 in 35 Premier League appearances last term.

Quality on the ball

As well as being willing to hound his opponents to try and intercept and win the ball back, there is also much more to Arter’s game than just that.

The 27-year-old is good on the ball and calm in possession – he currently has a passing accuracy of 88% this term (the same number he also finished on last season) – while he likes to take his opponents on and create chances for his teammates after picking up four assists and creating 34 chances for his teammates in the 2016/17 campaign.
