According to reports in The Telegraph, Newcastle United are one of the Premier League clubs interested in signing €20m (approximately £17.8m-rated) Las Palmas attacker Jonathan Viera during the January transfer window.

The Telegraph says that the Magpies, along with Burnley, are two of the English top flight teams keen on the 28-year-old, who will be allowed to leave the bottom-of-the-table La Liga outfit this month.

Their poor season follows on from an impressive 11th-placed finish term, which Viera proved to be an influential part of, and even though the attacking midfielder's contract isn't due to run out until 2021, The Telegraph says the Spanish strugglers are ready to cash in on him before the window slams shut on January 31.

Meanwhile, West Ham United moved out of the relegation zone following their last-gasp 2-1 home win against West Bromwich Albion on Tuesday, but they are still positioned precariously above the bottom three in what looks set to be hard-fought battle to escape the drop.

Manager David Moyes will be determined to strengthen his squad this month in order to aid his side's survival bid, and bringing Viera to the London Stadium could prove to be a shrewd move.

Here are three reasons West Ham must hijack Newcastle's bid to sign Viera…

Attacking overhaul

If the rumours are to be believed, Andre Ayew, Diafra Sakho and Andy Carroll could all leave West Ham during the January transfer window, and if they did it would certainly leave space for a new attacker to come in.

Viera is able to play on either flank or as a central attacking midfielder and that versatility could prove to be an interesting proposition for manager David Moyes, especially if he wants to bring in a player that can play in a variety of attacking roles.

His qualities

Viera is a versatile player, but he has plenty of other qualities in his locker.

While he has scored two goals and provided a further three assists for a Las Palmas side that have only scored 13 goals in 17 La Liga games this season, he netted seven and picked up an impressive eight assists in 31 Spanish top flight matches last term.

The 28-year-old is hugely impressive on the ball and according to WhoScored.com he has successfully completed 55 of the 79 dribbles he has attempted in La Liga this season, while he has also created 50 chances – he created a remarkable 81 last term.

The attacking midfielder has also proven his leadership skills as Las Palmas' captain – something that should impress Moyes if he is looking for big characters for his team – while his fine form was also enough to earn him a first Spain cap in October.

Price tag

Considering the number of chances he has created and the goals he has scored for one of the less fancied teams in La Liga over the course of the last 18 months, you would have to feel that £17.8m could prove to be something of a bargain in the current transfer market for a player that was considered good enough to start for Spain just a few months ago.

That fee would certainly be in West Ham's price range too this month, and the arrival of Viera at the London Stadium would take some of the creative pressure off of the shoulders of someone like Manuel Lanzini, who is often too heavily relied upon.
