According to a Sunday Express exclusive from earlier this month, West Ham gaffer Slaven Bilic is considering a January transfer swoop for Newcastle United forward Aleksandar Mitrovic.

The Serbian striker finds himself on the bench too regularly for his liking under Rafael Benitez, with Championship top scorer Dwight Gayle ahead of him in the pecking order, and a move away from St. James's Park may be required to ensure regular first team football.

Could Mitrovic be the saviour to the Irons' troubled season? The club have struggled to adapt to life in the London Stadium and firepower has been a real problem this term, with summer signings Simone Zaza and Jonathan Calleri continually falling short in front of goal.

Football FanCast see the 22-year-old front-man as the ideal mid-season signing to steer the Hammers clear of the relegation zone and here are our three reasons to back up that theory.

An upgrade on current striking options

Simone Zaza

When you consider how poorly players such as Simone Zaza and Jonathan Calleri have been, signing someone like Mitrovic automatically upgrades the quality of the squad Bilic has at his disposal.

Neither player has scored a Premier League goal for the Irons as they struggle to adapt to life in England.

Mitrovic has proven his abilities in the Premier League and was very impressive at times during Newcastle's relegation season last year.

No more fears for Andy Carroll

Andy Carroll

As good as Andy Carroll has proven he can be, the consistent injuries the England forward keeps suffering making him a liability to Slaven Bilic.

Signing a forward like Mitrovic ensures the Hammers no longer need to rely on Carroll's fitness to find goals from a striker - the Serbian netted a decent if unspectacular nine times last season.

His aerial ability also ensures the Irons have a route one option, similar to when Carroll's leading the line.

A fighter

The 22-year-old is a fighter and his unwillingness to give up could be vital to West Ham this season.

Mitrovic's temper can overcome him as he has seen red on two occasions already during his time in the England with Newcastle.

But with too many players seemingly unwilling to give 100% to the Irons cause, Bilic can rest assured he'll get full effort from the Serbian international on a weekly basis.
