West Ham United are not keen on signing Internazionale midfielder Matias Vecino, according to The Daily Star.

What's the story?

The Hammers have reportedly been offered the chance to sign the Uruguay international, as well as Austrian winger Valentino Lazaro on loan.

However, they are not keen on either of the Inter players, who are not their priorities, meaning they could hand Everton the chance to sign Vecino, with Calciomercato (via Football Italia) reporting the Toffees' interest.

This stance follows a report from The Mirror that West Ham are hoping to temporarily bring Ross Barkley to London Stadium, though their initial advances don't look hopeful.

Regardless of the Barkley situation, it seems as though the Hammers will not be pursuing Vecino as the solution to their midfield issue.

Champions League evidence

It is imperative that West Ham bring somebody in for the second half of the campaign, as Carlos Sanchez is currently the main competition to Mark Noble and Declan Rice, despite being limited to just 113 minutes of Premier League football so far this term.

Considering how much West Ham need to strengthen in that area, if a signing is not made by the end of the window, turning down a chance to sign Vecino could prove to look incredibly foolish.

He has not been a regular this season, but the 28-year-old has still made 13 starts and four substitute appearances across Serie A and the Champions League.

Using his statistics from Europe's biggest club competition, it can be seen that the Inter man would be a useful option for the Hammers as they look to push up the table.

He has made plenty of defensive contributions in his three starts, averaging 2.3 tackles, 2.3 interceptions and 1 clearance per game, while also showing an ability to create through his 1 key pass and 0.7 dribbles.

There would need to be a considerable improvement in his pass success rate of 55.2%, but his league number of 75.9% indicates that can be worked on.

It seems as though West Ham will be pursuing other targets in the winter window, but if that decision backfires they could end up looking brainless - especially if anything happens to Noble or Rice.

Meanwhile, a Hammers youngster has received glowing endorsements from Terry Westley.
