West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini has been speaking to the club’s official website, and one thing he said has stood out above all.

The Chilean was speaking about Andriy Yarmolenko and Carlos Sanchez, two players who have suffered serious injuries in the last year.

Yarmolenko unfortunately had to undergo surgery on his Achilles just weeks after bagging an impressive double against Everton last term, but it’s the former Manchester City boss’ comments on Sanchez that seem strange.

What did he say?

Pellegrini said: “They are two important players.

“Carlos is the only replacement we have for Declan Rice and he is working very hard to recover his performance that he had before his injury.

“Andriy was nine or ten months without playing one game, so maybe we need some time to fix all the players in their current positions.”

West Ham fans should be worried

If the Hammers boss sees Sanchez as an important player, then the supporters should be worried.

Some sections of the West Ham fanbase have already expressed their confusion at the Colombian being called important, taking to Twitter to ridicule the comment and make a point of just how bad Sanchez is.

Additionally, some fans of Sanchez’s former club Aston Villa also know just how bad the defensive midfielder can be.

Generally speaking, the overall view of the supporters is pretty accurate, so when a lot of fans from two different clubs are saying a player is bad, they’re probably right.

Furthermore, Pellegrini simply can’t rely on Sanchez for the long-term. He is 33 years of age now and has just come back from a serious injury that forced him to have surgery on his knee.

If he was bad before that who knows just how poorly he’ll perform after the surgery – he has only ever made eight league appearances for the Irons anyway.

Pellegrini is right in saying that he is the only other option behind Declan Rice but if he deems Sanchez as important West Ham are in trouble.
