West Ham eye move to re-sign defender

According to reports in the Daily Star, West Ham United are eyeing up a January move to re-sign their former loanee Carl Jenkinson from Arsenal.

What’s the word, then?

Well, Slaven Bilic signed the 24-year-old on loan at the beginning of last season after he impressed while on loan under Sam Allardyce throughout the 2014/15 campaign, but the move was cut short after he suffered a knee ligament injury in January.

He is now fit again after making his return against Reading in the EFL Cup last week, as well featuring against Ludogorets in the Champions League on Tuesday night, but with Hector Bellerin now established in that position for the Gunners, Jenkinson may well be considering his future at the Emirates.

How did he do during his loan spell with the Hammers?

He impressed and quickly established himself as the club’s first-choice right-back. Fans and pundits alike praised his consistent and committed performances, while he even deputised in goal when Adrian was sent off against Leicester City at the start of last season.

Do West Ham need a right-back?

Yes. It is a position that the club has tried – and failed – to remedy in recent seasons, with Michail Antonio often being deployed there this term.

However, the winger has struggled with his defensive duties, and with Sam Byram and Alvaro Arbeloa also failing to impress, it is a position that could be a priority for Slaven Bilic in January.
