West Ham eyeing needless move for Djibril Sidibe

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

West Ham United are eyeing a move for AS Monaco defender Djibril Sidibe this summer, per RMC Sport journalist Mohamed Bouhafsi.

What’s the word?

Sidibe seems to be nearing a departure from the Ligue 1 club in this transfer window, with the Hammers and Newcastle United both in talks over a potential deal.

The France international, who has won 18 caps for his country, has made over 110 appearances for Monaco.

In 2018/19, he endured an injury-hit campaign but still made a total of 32 appearances in all competitions.

The report claims that West Ham and Newcastle are not alone in chasing Sidibe, with other English clubs also enquiring.

Needless purchase

West Ham don’t need a right-back.

They currently have Ryan Fredericks and Pablo Zabaleta in the position, while Michail Antonio offers the versatility to play as a wing-back if Manuel Pellegrini decides to opt for such a formation.

The Irons really need depth in midfield, particularly with Manuel Pellegrini confirming that Pedro Obiang is nearing a departure from the club.

With him gone, they would be left with just Mark Noble, Declan Rice, Jack Wilshere and Carlos Sanchez in the role.

Buying a right-back does absolutely nothing to solve that issue.
