West Ham fans fear Manuel Pellegrini will start Antonio at right-back vs Cardiff

West Ham host Cardiff City at the London Stadium on Tuesday night fresh off a 3-0 win at Newcastle, and attentions have already turned to the midweek clash.

Irons fans are growing concerned that Manuel Pellegrini will call on 28-year-old Michail Antonio to play at right-back in place of the experienced Pablo Zabaleta.

Pellegrini has already noted that he fears the Argentinean full-back cannot play all seven December matches, and could look to rest a regular member of his defence against one of the Premier League’s early strugglers.

Speaking ahead of the Newcastle game, the Chilean head coach was quoted saying: “For his age, it is impossible for him to play seven games in December, so we need to see what we are going to do in that position.

“First we have to win at Newcastle with Pablo, and then we need to work out what we are going to do. Maybe with different players but we need someone to replace Pablo because I repeat, he cannot play seven games in December.”

Antonio has played at right-back before, but is yet to start in a defensive role so far this season – featuring across the attacking midfield line and as a striker.

Another option would be to turn to the academy again, having promoted Grady Diangana when Andriy Yarmolenko suffered a potentially season-ending Achilles injury.
