West Ham United confirmed on Wednesday afternoon that Jordan Hugill had left the club to join Middlesbrough on a season-long loan.

It would be fair to say that eyebrows were raised when West Ham signed Hugill from Preston North End in the final stages of the January transfer window.

The forward scored eight times in 27 Championship appearances for Preston in the first half of last season, but played just 22 minutes of Premier League football upon his arrival at West Ham.

It was always going to be difficult for the 26-year-old to gain first-team football this season when considering West Ham's spending spree.

And it is not a surprise that the 6ft ace has dropped back down to the Championship.
