West Ham fans react to ‘safest bet’ Southampton man starting

While Southampton’s reasonably poor start to life under Claude Puel has largely gone unnoticed, the lack of starts for Charlie Austin has served as a source of frustration to those on the South Coast.

The French coach has tended to utilise both Nathan Redmond and Shane Long as his central strikers, though the ex-QPR man has been in lethal form of late.

Injuries have always blighted the 27-year-old, who has seen his career stall somewhat since notching 18 goals for the Rs during their ill-fated Premier League stint.

Infamously, he actually almost signed for the Saints’ opponents today, West Ham United, though saw a move break down.

His long-term fitness was publically questioned by David Sullivan who alleged the striker had no ligaments in one of his knees.

Well, he’s proved as clinical as ever for his new charges, bagging three goals thus far and forcing his way back into the team.

So, as you can well imagine, Hammers on social media have been wary of Austin, who starts today.

His scoring a crucial goal against the side he almost signed for seems perhaps inevitable to some of the more cynical fans on Twitter.
