West Ham have enjoyed an upturn in form in recent weeks, after following their first win of the season against Everton with an impressive goalless draw against Chelsea.
The improvement in results has seen pressure upon the Hammers significantly reduced but Manuel Pellegrini’s side still have a lot of work to do on and off the field – and they face a stern test with the latter.
19-year-old sensation Declan Rice has entered the final year of his contract at the London Stadium and is not willing to put pen to paper given the offers on the table from West Ham, the most recent of which is said to be worth around £12k-a-week.
If no agreement is reached by next summer, West Ham could see one of their brightest players from the past 18 months leave for nothing but a debate is rumbling on as to whether Rice is right to hold out for a higher wage.
Questions have been asked on social media and fans have given their view on the situation. We have gathered some of the best reactions below.
Agreed. Yes it’s enough, however I feel like the going rate for a ‘talked up’ 19 year old (however good he turns out) is in excess of £15k especially when any of the top 6 would give him that at the drop of a hat

You have to base this on performances and quality. In theory yeah 15k a week should be enough but this boy is going to be v v good so the club need to think of the future gains of offering him a better contract. Id say 20-25k and he would be happy and so would i as a hammer

You need to think about relativity – West Ham signed sanchez who rice is keeping out of the side on 70k. We know money in football is crazy but market value surely dictates?

If you lead with “19 year old” you’re suggesting that £15k p/w is enough but if you lead with “an integral part of the team and one of West Ham’s biggest hopes for short and long term success” (which is accurate) then it’s obviously not. #whu #WHUFC

Should be on over 30 k if you think about some of the players out there and in our current squad

If Reece Oxford who never plays gets a lot more then yes, definitely.

Considering that Reece Oxford at West Ham on the back of 1 game is on £20k a week then Rice should be on the same as a minimum

Normally yes definitely but seeing as Reece Oxford is on 20k a week Rice should be on a minimum of that!! Yeah I know that Oxford shouldn’t be on that in the first place but that’s the boards fault and they’ve to deal with it
— Rigger (@LiamHead7) September 25, 2018
Normally I would say this is fine but due to the fact that Reece oxford (a player who cannot get near the first team) is on £20k a week reportedly then he does deserve more!!

If he was an incoming player a club would pay 40/50m for a player of that quality and 100k a week..we are just exploiting that he’s already with us..he’s better than John Stones so do the maths
