West Ham lining up ambitious free transfer

West Ham are attempting to land loanee Alex Song for free this summer, according to reports from The Sun.

The 48-time Cameroon international joined the Hammers on loan last season from Barcelona and shone as the London club mounted a shock top four challenge before their form dipped over the winter period.

Although Song’s own performance level dropped as the Irons slid into midtable, the 27-year-old still made 28 appearances in all competitions and has attracted interest from Chelsea.

However, West Ham are keen to keep him on a permanent basis, but are looking to do so without the need for a transfer fee.

Reports claim that the Upton Park outfit are attempting to thrash out a deal with the Catalan side to nab Song for free, and hope that Barca will be keen to accept due to the potential to hand the player a reduced pay-off.

Slaven Bilic’s men could match his £70,000-per-week wages, which may be enough to ensure that the Catalans only have to pay him a small parting settlement and may offset the £5m they want for him.
