Jermain Defoe’s 2016/17 season in numbers

West Ham’s striker search over the summer bordered on embarrassment. The Hammers hunted far and wide for big players to usher in the new London Stadium era, but names such as Alexandre Lacazette, Carlos Bacca and Michy Batshuayi evaded them and eventually the Irons settled on a loan move for Simone Zaza… we won’t go into how that has worked out for them.

It appears West Ham are once again shopping around for new players ahead of January, with The Telegraph having even claimed that a cringe-inducing set of letters (more like e-mails) have been sent around to the Premier League’s top clubs asking kindly for any players available on loan to be sent their way.

As well as this, The Sun have reported that Jermain Defoe, a one-time east London player, has been targeted. Although die-hard Hammers are unlikely to be thrilled by this, his stats suggest he’s just what they need…

He may be 34 now, but the well-travelled former England international has been in blistering form this term. Indeed, he’s netted eight goals from 44 shots, which works out as a goal every 5.5 shots. As well as this, 35 of 44 efforts have been from inside the box, showing that he’s the penalty area predator Bilic needs to convert the abundance of chances created by the likes of Dimitri Payet.

Are you won over now, West Ham fans?
