According to a report in the Daily Star, West Ham United manager David Moyes has made Brighton and Hove Albion's Lewis Dunk and Swansea City's Alfie Mawson his top targets as he looks to prioritise bringing a new centre-back to the club this summer.

What's the word, then?

Alfie Mawson in action for Tottenham Hotspur

Well, the Daily Star says that while the east London outfit are yet to finalise their transfer policy while they aren't yet safe from relegation and with Moyes yet to sign a new contract, the Scot is already drawing up plans for a summer of recruitment.

The Daily Star says that the Scot wants to bring in a tough, commanding centre-back with top flight experience to boost his shaky backline, and that he is keen on Dunk and Mawson.

The report adds that Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are also keen on Mawson, while Brighton understandably don't want to sell Dunk considering they look set to survive.

How have Mawson and Dunk done this season?

They have done well.

Both players have played every minute of their respective side's Premier League campaigns, and Dunk especially has impressed given it is his first season at this level.

The Brighton man has certainly shown his strength in the air by winning 113 of the 180 duels he has faced this season, as per WhoScored.com, while Mawson has won 109 of the 167 according to the same stats-based website.

Would either be a good signing for West Ham?

They certainly would be.

The duo have shown what good defenders they are and that they have the right mentality for their respective clubs this season, while they aren't afraid to put their body on the line for their team – something the Irons have lacked at times.

They may not be big names, but if they want a leader who can help to bring the identity of the club back, then either player would be a worthwhile addition to their backline and would prove that Moyes knows the changes the fans, who have called for the club to re-sign Ravel Morrison on Twitter, are looking for this summer.

Which one should they go for?

If they had to pick between the two – not thinking about potential transfer fees – West Ham would probably opt for Mawson, given he is younger, has more experience at this level and is also know for his calmness in possession of the ball.
