West Ham pull plug on ex-Chelsea star deal

West Ham have pulled the plug on a potential deal for Samuel Eto’o after the striker demanded £120,000-per-week to move Upton Park, according to reports from The Mirror.

The 33-year-old Cameroonian was recently released by Chelsea after one season at Stamford Bridge, and was thought to be keen to stay in English football.

With the Hammers having lost Andy Carroll to injury, a move for the veteran marksman has been talked up over the past few days, with meetings understood to have taken place between the Hammers and the player’s representatives.

But now it has emerged that discussions were less than fruitful, with Eto’o having asked for a stunning £120,000-per-week salary.

Although Sam Allardyce was understood to have been keen on the ageing goal-getter, such sums are thought to have been seen as over the top given the African star’s advancing years and fitness concerns, and the Irons will now look at other targets – including Arsenal’s Joel Campbell and Portuguese free agent Hugo Almeida.

Eto’o is also attracting interest from teams in the MLS and Middles East, while there has been talk of financially lucrative offers from Asian sides for the former Barcelona, Inter Milan and Anzhi Makhachkala man.
