West Ham United have dropped their interest in signing AFC Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson, with the striker set to sign a new contract with the Cherries, per Football Insider.

What’s the word?

The Hammers are thin in the striking department after Marko Arnautovic, Lucas Perez and Andy Carroll all departed the club this summer.

Manager Manuel Pellegrini can currently call on Javier Hernandez and Jordan Hugill as his senior strikers.

Football Insider claim that the Irons had attempted to secure a deal to sign Wilson, the forward who scored 15 goals in all competitions in 2018/19.

However, he is now set to pen new terms at the Cherries, taking his wages to £100,000-per-week.

The same report claims that the Irons want to sign two strikers in this transfer window to bolster Pellegrini’s strikeforce.

The striker they needed

Wilson would have been absolutely perfect for the Hammers.

A quick, strong forward with an excellent eye for goal and a senior England international, the 27-year-old would have been a truly exceptional acquisition.

Football Insider claims that Bournemouth wanted £50m for their star man but that is exactly what he is, a star man.

Following the departure of Arnautovic, West Ham need one of those themselves, particularly up front.

A deal to sign Wilson would have actually increased their goalscoring capacity – the Austria international scored 11 goals in all competitions in 2018/19 – while adding a pacier dimension to their forward line.

This, then, is a severe blow to the club’s summer plans.
