Andy Carroll has reaffirmed his desire to remain at West Ham United - as reported by talkSPORT - despite the fact that his current contract is set to expire at the end of this season.

What’s the word?

The striker told the radio station that, “It’s important for me to get back playing, get back fully fit and show that I deserve another deal here.”

The 6’4” forward first joined the Hammers in 2012, and has often impressed during his time at the club when fit. Unfortunately, the 29-year-old has been at full fitness far too infrequently. The Irons cannot justify extending his current contract when his fitness record suggests he can’t be relied upon to be available when they need him.

Manuel Pellegrini must take the ruthless decision to cut his losses on Carroll, and seek to bolster his side’s striking contingent with a new face instead.

Savvy business

Another player whose contract is due to expire in the summer is Arsenal’s Danny Welbeck. Whilst the 42-cap England man is injury prone himself, he has been more consistently available than Carroll in recent seasons.

Tactically, he also offers a more useful option for Pellegrini. His versatility allows him to operate on the flanks, as well as through the middle where he can replicate the target man role performed by Carroll.

With the Arsenal man looking set to be available on a free transfer, his arrival at the London Stadium to take up Carroll’s role in the squad would represent a very smart bit of business for West Ham.
