Chris Smalling will see his Manchester United contract expire at the end of the season, and West Ham United should make a move for the central defender.

What's the word, then?

Smalling has made over 300 appearances for United since a 2010 move from Fulham, and has been a regular for Jose Mourinho’s side this season.

The former Maidstone United youngster was actually left out of United’s first two Premier League matches of the 2018-19 campaign against Leicester City and Brighton & Hove Albion, but has played the full 90 minutes in every game since.

The Englishman will see his current contract with the Red Devils expire at the end of the season, however, and his future with the club is far from secure.

It is true that United have a 12-month option on Smalling's contract, but the 20-time English champions look set to sign at least one central defender in January, and that would throw the 28-year-old's future into doubt.

The Sun have claimed that Everton want to sign Smalling, but West Ham should also be eyeing a move for the 31-time England international.

Why should West Ham make a move?

Smalling takes a lot of criticism, and there is no getting away from the fact that the centre-back could be better in possession of the ball.

He is actually a very good defender, however, and played a key role in United posting the second-best defensive record in the Premier League last season.

The 6ft 4in ace, who has started to pop up with the odd goal or two, is also a two-time Premier League title winner, and would make a very good signing for the majority of the teams in the top flight.

Issa Diop has impressed for West Ham this season following his summer arrival from Toulouse, and Smalling could form a rock-solid partnership with the 21-year-old at the London Stadium next season.

If Smalling does indeed become available, West Ham really should be in the mix.
