West Ham should return with improved Lascelles bid

According to Sky Sports News, West Ham United have failed with a £20m offer for Newcastle United captain Jamaal Lascelles, with the Magpies quick to reject the bid.

What’s the story?

New West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini has already improved his defensive options by bringing Ryan Fredericks and Issa Diop to the club this summer.

Fredericks arrived on a free transfer from Fulham, but the Hammers broke their transfer record to sign Diop, who impressed the club’s fans on his debut at the weekend.

West Ham have been linked with Lascelles since the start of the transfer window, and according to Sky Sports News, the Hammers made a £20m bid for the Magpies captain.

However, the same report claims that Newcastle were quick to reject the offer, and informed their Premier League rivals that Lascelles is not for sale at any price.

West Ham are seemingly not playing games this summer having also secured the signature of Jack Wilshere on a free transfer from Arsenal.

Should West Ham return with a new bid?

In short, yes. It is not a surprise that West Ham had an opening bid of £20m rejected, but they should test the water with an offer in the region of £30m.

Newcastle are desperate to keep hold of the centre-back, who was a touch unfortunate to miss out on a spot in the England squad for the 2018 World Cup.

Money talks, however, and it will speak loudly to Newcastle if West Ham were to flex their financial muscles with a big offer this summer.

The 24-year-old scored three times in 33 Premier League appearances for Newcastle last term, and his form was very impressive for long spells.

The thought of 6ft 2in Lascelles lining up alongside Diop at the heart of the defence in a move that would relegate Angelo Ogbonna to the substitutes’ bench, will surely be exciting to the West Ham fans, and the London club should do all they can to test Newcastle’s resolve in the coming days.
