According to The Mirror, a number of Premier League clubs are queueing up to sign Chelsea’s Michy Batshuayi after the Belgian was recalled from a mediocre loan spell at Valencia – West Ham should throw their hat in the ring amidst doubts over Marko Arnautovic’s future.
Well, The Mirror reports that a host of top flight teams are keen on a swoop for the 25-year-old, including Everton and former club, Marseille, as well as relegation candidates Crystal Palace and Fulham.
It is understood that the Blues would be willing to listen to bids at £14m – under half of what they paid to bring the 23-cap international to Stamford Bridge in 2016 and just over half his market value – so they seem pretty keen to be rid of the misfit.
West Ham are no strangers to taking such players on, having signed Samir Nasri earlier this month on the day he completed his doping ban and snatching up controversial striker, Marko Arnautovic, in 2017 – with the latter potentially heading out the door this month, Manuel Pellegrini should make a move for Batshuayi.
Having received an offer of £35m for the Austrian from an anonymous Chinese club, West Ham are battening down the hatches as they hope to hold onto their talisman; should their worst fears be realised though, they must make sure they have a contingency plan in place, otherwise their top eight aspirations will be in tatters.
Arnautovic is the Irons’ joint-top scorer in all competitions this season with eight strikes to his name and losing that output would be a disaster – other options Andy Carroll, Chicharito and, in particular, Lucas Perez are not good enough to produce the goods on a regular basis.
Batshuayi has proved on the international stage and on loan at Borussia Dortmund last season that he can be a top striker but, for whatever reason, he hasn’t been afforded chances at Chelsea.
Signing the hitman would be a fantastic bit of business for the Hammers and would ensure they are in a position to accept an astronomical fee for ‘Arnie’ from the unnamed Eastern suitor should they continue to come back with improved offers.
