West Ham should snatch chance to sign Bas Dost

Newcastle are once again lining up a swoop for Bas Dost this summer, but West Ham should steal the Dutchman from under the Magpies’ noses.

What’s the story?

Long-time Premier League target Bas Dost is almost certain to leave Sporting CP this summer, after the Dutchman was one of a number of squad members attacked by his own fans this week.

The 33-goal striker needed stitches in his head after being hit by a fan, and he is one of several players looking certain to leave due to clashes with club president Bruno de Carvalho.

Dost has been strongly linked with Newcastle, but West Ham have also been linked with the striker in the past, and they should pounce on the opportunity to grab him this summer.

Too good to pass up?

It’s not often a 33-goal striker puts himself on the market, but the chaos at Sporting CP could have the entire Premier League clamouring over Bas Dost this summer.

The towering Dutchman is not the most mobile of strikers, but his goalscoring record speaks for itself, grabbing 33 goals this season in all competitions, following on from an incredible 37-goal haul last season.

Dost is the ultimate poacher, and just recently scored after taking a touch for the first time in 45 strikes. In other words, the 28 year-old had scored 45 one-touch goals in a row, a truly remarkable statistic.

While this might concern some over his ability to be involved in build-up play, the experienced striker averages one key pass per game in the league this year, so he’s certainly not incapable of turning supplier from time to time.

Marko Arnautovic has excelled as a central striker for the Hammers this season, but there will be plenty of changes at the club when a new manager is appointed, and it seems unlikely he won’t want to bring in at least one striker.

The Hammers will certainly have to fight off some competition for the Dutch goalscoring machine, but the pull of living in London with a fresh-faced new manager could sway the odds in their favour.
