According to reliable club insider @ExWHUemployee on his latest ‘The West Ham Way’ transfer blog (June 24), the east London club are interested in a summer move for Chelsea midfielder Ross Barkley, rated at £22.5m by Transfermarkt.
Well, @ExWHUemployee says that the Irons believe that one of Barkley, Danny Drinkwater or Ruben Loftus-Cheek will be allowed to leave Stamford Bridge this summer, and that they are keen to snap one of them up with a view to a permanent deal to help them with their English quota.
Barkley only joined the Blues during the January transfer window from Everton, but he struggled to make a real impact in the second-half of the 2017-18 campaign because of form and injury, and he made just four appearances in all competitions to suggest that he could already be on his way out before the window slams shut on August 9.
Meanwhile, Manuel Pellegrini has also been linked with big-money moves for Lazio’s Felipe Anderson and Nice’s Jean Michael Seri as he looks to significantly strengthen his squad to ensure they secure a top-half finish minimum next term.
Well, despite his problems over the last 12 months or so, there is no doubt that Barkley is hugely talented and once he is fully fit, he could be an animal in the Premier League.
While he didn’t do it for Everton on enough of a consistent basis, he showed plenty of glimpses of the talent he has in his locker, and a move to the London Stadium would allow him to get the regular minutes on the pitch to fulfil his potential – something he appears unlikely to get with Chelsea.
The east London outfit, whose fans are split on signing a 26-year-old World Cup ace, need a new attacking midfielder who provides creativity and a goal threat with Manuel Lanzini set to be out until 2019 because of injury, and Barkley would prove to be an even better signing for the club than Anderson and Seri.
