West Ham United are interested in signing Bayern Munich striker Sandro Wagner, but they face competition from Crystal Palace, according to The Sun.

What's the word?

The East London outfit made a splash in the summer transfer window as they recruited nine new faces.

It seems, though, that manager Manuel Pellegrini wants more, and according to The Sun, Wagner is on their list.

The 30-year-old joined Bayern in January for a second spell, 10 years after leaving the Bavarians.

So far, though, the striker has had to settle for being second string behind Robert Lewandowski.

The newspaper states that Wagner is frustrated by the lack of first-team minutes on offer and is open to leaving.

It is believed that West Ham want to strike a £6m deal.

What type of player would they be getting?

One that is very similar to Andy Carroll.

Wagner has a strong presence in the box and could work as the ideal target man for teams looking to get balls into the box.

Like Carroll, the striker is an asset in the air, and he is able to hold off defenders with relative ease, which makes him a nuisance in the final third.

If Pellegrini is set on recruiting Wagner, then it does call into question the future of Carroll.

The former Liverpool attacker is out of contract next summer and his injury woes have kept him on the sidelines for the entire season so far.

Perhaps Wagner is being eyed as Carroll's replacement.
