According to reports in The Sun on Sunday, West Ham United are ready to launch a £15m summer move for Newcastle United captain Jamaal Lascelles.
Well, The Sun on Sunday says that the east London outfit, who are reportedly interested in appointing Manuel Pellegrini as David Moyes’ successor next season, want to make some big signings this summer to try and appease their angry fan base, and they see the Toon skipper as one of their main targets.
The Sun on Sunday says that the Irons are keen to make a move for the impressive 24-year-old if they retain their Premier League status – they are currently one place and two points above the relegation zone ahead of their potentially season-defining clash against 18th-placed Southampton at the London Stadium on Saturday – and they believe the player could be tempted by a bigger deal with them.
The report adds that the centre-back’s agent is close to the Hammers’ camp, which could also influence any deal.
He has been brilliant, and he is well and truly a fans’ favourite at St James’ Park.
The 24-year-old has often led by example and been a vocal part of the defence and the team in general, showing that he is willing to out his body on the line for the club.
As well as his defensive qualities, Lascelles has also shown that he can be a threat at the other end of the pitch for his team too, scoring three goals in 25 Premier League appearances this term and eight in 95 outings in total for the Tyneside outfit.
He certainly would be.
The 24-year-old is a big character and has shown just how good he is in the top flight this season, while he also can’t be too far off a call-up for England.
With Jose Fonte leaving last month, Winston Reid injury-prone and James Collins’ future still up in the air, the Irons desperately need a centre-back this summer and there won’t be many better options on the market with Premier League experience than Lascelles.
Much could depend on Newcastle, with the scenario likely to be different on whethey they stay up or suffer relegation.
If they survive it will likely take a fee of far more than £15m to convince them to sell their captain considering his contract doesn’t run out until 2023, and it will depend on just how high West Ham are willing to go.
