West Ham United's decision to hand Robert Snodgrass a new contract during the summer is increasingly looking like a bad one following his latest display in the 4-0 humiliation against Oxford United on Wednesday night.

The winger signed an extension until 2021 with an option of a further 12 months in July, with Manuel Pellegrini, David Gold and David Sullivan seemingly deciding his performances last season warranted a longer stay - 38 appearances in all competitions shows how in favour he was.

However, the Scotland international has largely found himself on the substitutes' bench so far this term, with just one Premier League start to his name, and he came under criticism for his performance in the previous round of the Carabao Cup last month.

We suggested after his outing against Scotland earlier this month that he is no longer up to the task at Premier League level, and he failed to convince anyone against the U's that he still has something to offer in the top flight.

The 32-year-old was given the opportunity to stake his claim for a spot in Manuel Pellegrini's starting XI against League One opposition, with the Hammers looking to have a great chance to advance to the fourth round of the competition – but he failed to take it, as did many of his teammates.

Despite playing on the right-hand side, he failed to attempt a single dribble and was unsuccessful with all of the four crosses he did produce, according to SofaScore.

The experienced former Leeds United man also lost possession on 16 occasions, which is more than careless and hard to fathom when you are playing against a club in a division two below yours – his display even drew a 2/10 rating from Football London.

You can never fault Snodgrass for a lack of effort, but if he isn't contributing in the final third as a winger then that is clearly a big issue.

As things stand, he doesn't appear to be anywhere near getting past Andriy Yarmolenko in the team, and with just under two years still remaining on his deal it's difficult to see that he ever will challenge him, especially on current form.
