In Spain, you have the El Classico. In Italy, you have the Derby D’Italia. And in England, you have Manchester United vs. Liverpool. It doesn’t get much bigger than this in the Premier League… especially for fans worldwide.
And the stage is almost perfectly set this time around. Both managers Louis van Gaal and Brendan Rodgers are under huge amounts of pressure to perform this season, with both teams also sitting level on the table with seven points having lost their recent games after three successive clean sheets.
For the Red Devils it’s all about seeing whether they can challenge for the title after spending over £250million in the course of two summer transfer windows, while for the Merseyside Reds the mission is to get back into the Champions League. And a victory for either will be a major push towards their respective objectives.
The two are, fair to say, not as big a match-up than the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City, but make no mistake there is quality all over the pitch and we’re in for an epic encounter.
To warm up for the game, here is the Combined XI for Manchester United v Liverpool, based on quality and/or recent performances. We have not included any long-term injury personnel such as Daniel Sturridge in the shortlist.
