Wayne Rooney is set to start on the bench for England against Slovenia on Tuesday night. The unthinkable appears to be happening, with Gareth Southgate addressing the elephant in the room (metaphorically, of course) in removing the skipper from his plans.
Many managers have danced around the subject in the past, either shoehorning ‘Wazza’ into midfielder or out wide, while others have gone all out to ensure he starts up front, come what may!
But, Southgate, perhaps buoyed by the ‘I can do whatever I want’ mentality of being a caretaker boss, has tackled the issue head on after giving the Manchester United man a chance against Malta – a 90 minutes in which he pretty much summed up why there are so many calling for him to be axed.
