Speaking to the Football Faithful podcast (08/05) Chris Waddle has talked up Wolves’ Matt Doherty, hinting that he was unfairly left out of the PFA Team of the Year.
Wolves have been one of the best newly promoted teams the Premier League has seen and a host of their players have made the step up from Championship to top-flight level look easy.
One of whom is Matt Doherty, Wolves’ right-wing back. The Irishman has had an excellent campaign and he’s been a major part of Nuno Santo’s system.
He missed out on the PFA Team of the Year, with Trent Alexander-Arnold claiming the right back spot instead. A number of players could have been in the conversation, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka also enjoying a tremendous term.
With that in mind. Waddle has sung the praises of Doherty, who is valued at £13.5 million by Transfermarkt. At the same time, he also showed frustration towards the players who voted for the team. He told the Football Faithful podcast:
“People thought he’s probably not going to make it, and Wolves have obviously seen something in him and now they are getting their reward, they’ve had a wonderful season. The Premier League doesn’t faze him, he’s gone out there and done his job, playing that wing-back role. I definitely agree he’s got a good case for being in there.
“I don’t really think that a lot of players that vote look at people like Matt Doherty. He’s been bypassed, most people look at the top two and think, I’m picking him.”
Wolves have a number of excellent players in forward areas with the likes of Raul Jimenez and Diogo Jota grabbing the headlines.
However, Doherty has been excellent and has gone under the radar this season. Like some of the players at Molineux, his form dropped off slightly in the penultimate months but, aside from that, the marauding full-back been incredibly reliable, scoring eight goals and providing ten assists in all-competitions.
The fact that he goes about his business in a quiet fashion probably suggests why players didn’t vote for him in the TOTY and, in that regard, it’s easy to understand Waddle’s comments.
Raul Jimenez is turning it on for Wolves and Mexico right now! He definitely deserves the song in the video below…
Alexander-Arnold has had a hand in numerous goals but, when it’s come to the defensive side of the game, Doherty has arguably been better.
In another year he may have got more recognition, but unfortunately for Wolves, Liverpool have made it easy for everyone to rave about them.
