Ignazio Abate may not be a big name like Joao Cancelo, but he is a sensible option for Wolves

According to GazzaMercato, Wolverhampton Wanderers have switched their interest from Joao Cancelo to AC Milan full-back Ignazio Abate.

What’s the story?

Wolves had been targeting Valencia’s right-back Joao Cancelo over a proposed £35million move, but it now looks like the Portuguese 24-year-old is heading to Juventus.

According to GazzaMercato, Wolves are now looking at Ignazio Abate who is entering the final year of his contract.

No fee is mentioned in the report but Abate, who has never played outside of Italy, is valued at £2.7million on Transfermarkt.

A sensible option

Wolves fan will be understandably disappointed that they missed out on blockbuster signing Cancelo, but Abate would offer experience and composure on the right side of their defence, at a much lower price.

Having amassed over 200 Serie A appearances for the Rossoneri, Abate still has plenty to offer and would help shore up the Wolves back line.

He may not be a superstar wing-back bombing forward and used as much as an attacking outlet as a defensive one, but he will be a solid and sensible option that would serve Wolves well in the top-flight.
