Wolverhampton Wanderers officially confirmed the signing of Ecuador international Leonardo Campana during the January transfer window and the forward, formerly of Barcelona SC, has put pen to paper on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
Not only that but the 19-year-old talent was also Nuno Espirito Santo’s first signing of the window and, by the looks of it, it’s a really exciting one.
Currently, he’s representing them in the pre-Olympic Championship and last year he was even their top-scorer at the South American Under-20 Championship, helping his team lift the trophy in the end.
Needless to say, he looks like a real prospect.
However, Campana’s agent, Frederico Pena, has paid him one of the highest possible compliments by drawing comparisons between Vinicius Junior, who signed for Real Madrid for £39.6m back in 2017, and his client.
Here’s what Pena said, as quoted by AreaNapoli:
“He is young and needs time to grow, but to really grow you have to do it in a top club: only in this way can he really improve, he must think big! Vinicius Jr is the example: he went to Real Madrid without fear despite being just 18 years old, he moved to the biggest club in the world and is making huge strides. Campana is mentally strong, just like Vinicius. He is a winner. Leo is already a hero at home.”
Being compared to Vinicius is clearly a huge deal but Pena has also heaped praise on the youngster, emphasising both his skill and mentality.
Of course, while this will be fantastic news for Wolves and their fans alike, the fact he is already a hero back in his home country underlines the weight of expectation on his shoulders, while comparisons with the Los Blancos certainly point towards how highly he is expected to rise in the game.
The stage has been set and everyone will be eager to see how Campana performs in the Premier League.
