According to ESPN FC, Wolves had agreed a £22m deal in the summer for out-of-favour Reds striker Divock Origi before the player turned down the move. Everton are reportedly preparing a January bid but Nuno Espirito Santo should fight to bring him to the Molineux instead.

What's the story?

The Belgian hasn't played a single minute under boss Jurgen Klopp so far this campaign after returning from his loan at Bundesliga outfit Wolfsburg in the summer.

The versatile forward made 31 appearances for Die Wolfe in the 17/18 season, scoring six goals and assisting a further two but didn't exactly set the league alight and has slipped further down the pecking order at Anfield since the arrival of Xherdan Shaqiri from Stoke.

Still only 23, Origi has plenty of time to improve his game and is absolutely good enough for the top flight, having contributed to 17 goals for the Merseyside club in 50 Premier League appearances since the 16/17 season.

Wolves are a club with clear intentions of improving and developing themselves. The signings of Portuguese internationals Rui Patricio and Joao Moutinho in the summer highlighted the Midlands side's ambitions and the pull of the project that is going on.

Considering Wolves' stellar start to the campaign, Origi may have to rethink his original decision to reject the Black Country side.

Why Wolves should try again

Arguably, it is Wolves' defensive form rather than their attacking prowess that has seen them rise to eighth in the Premier League standings. They have kept four clean sheets from eight games played leading to some calling for captain Connor Coady to be included in the Three Lions' UEFA Nations League squad.

Mexican striker Raul Jimenez is the current first choice option up front and has had a direct hand in 56% of the Molineux outfit's goals (two goals and three assists), but has at times been wasteful. The Premier League calculates that he has missed seven big chances, the joint-second most in the league.

Backup Leo Bonatini has worked hard but has looked out of his depth in his five substitute appearances and hasn't yet got a goal to his name. Additionally, former Athletico Madrid winger Diogo Jota has looked a shadow of the player he was last season in the Championship and has recorded neither a goal or an assist so far.

Origi, valued at £9m by Transfermarkt, could slot in at any point across Nuno's front three and would provide competition for Jimenez or perhaps bench Jota if the former Lille man is preferred out wide.

If Wolves want to cement a top half finish, they need to be able to rely on each and every player on the pitch and the bench and moving for a player who is still young but has experience in three different major leagues would be a smart swoop.
