Jordan Pickford’s heroics out in Russia have made it easy to forget that, for much of the Premier League season, it was a close run thing between the Everton man and Jack Butland for the England number one shirt.
It was Pickford’s distribution that saw him get the nod and he grew into the tournament to become a national icon but Butland has similar quality and would have backed himself to have matched his rival’s quality between the sticks.
