Wolves appear to be close to making their first major splash of the January transfer window after The Athletic journalist Tim Spiers provided an encouraging update in their pursuit of Olympiacos winger Daniel Podence.

What's he said?

Over the course of the weekend, Wolves weren't in competitive action as the FA Cup's fourth round took centre stage and off the pitch, the rumour mill was running at full speed.

There were plenty of conflicting reports - one minute their mooted move for Podence was on (via Daily Mail), the next it was off (per Sportime), and vice-versa.

However, Spiers has eased potential fears by suggesting that a deal is very close to being reached.

He tweeted:

Much-needed addition

The west Midlanders have dabbled into the transfer market already this month, but each addition as had the future in mind - Leonardo Campana will join the U23 squad while 17-year-old Nigel Lonwijk will be some way off the first-team anytime soon.

Nuno Santo has been desperate for signings to bolster his first-team squad, even more so after allowing summer arrival Patrick Cutrone to depart back to Italy already.

Call yourself a Wolves expert? How much did each of these January signings cost?

Outside of the starting XI, Wolves' squad is very thin and lacks any sort of real top-flight quality, which is mostly seen with their attacking department.

The only senior striker is Raul Jimenez, whilst Pedro Neto is the one backup option to both wingers, Diogo Jota and Adama Traore.

Podence brings depth in that department, certainly. The 24-year-old has played 17 matches on the right-hand side, and nine on the left so far this campaign for Olympiacos, where he has also scored and assisted five goals apiece, per Transfermarkt.

He was left out of the squad to face AEK Athens on Sunday afternoon despite travelling too.

Wolves seem very close to completing this one if Spiers' comments are accurate.
