Willy Boly may not be the first name that comes to mind when looking at why Wolves have done so well on their return to the Premier League, but the defender is starting to earn rave reviews from supporters.
The Ivorian was in superb form, taking plaudits aplenty as Wolves earned a point away against Chelsea. Boly made a game-high ten clearances on Sunday, a stat which shows just how imperious he was.
Wolves were resolute and dogged, showing a different side to themselves as they had limited touches in the opponent’s penalty area and built the foundations of their performance on the defence.
Although free-flowing in attack when they want to be, their defensive structure has had a big say in why they sit in 7th place, having conceded less goals than both Arsenal and Manchester United.
Boly has been at the forefront of that, missing just two league matches in 2018/19 after signing permanently following a loan spell from Porto last season. He has been a reliable figure in the Wolves defence and appears 15th on the Premier League’s stats for tackles made with 67.
Stars such as Diogo Jota and Ruben Neves have received the bulk of the praise since arriving in the West Midlands, but judging by fan reaction, Wolves appear to have found a key unsung hero in this side.
Here’s a look at what they’ve been saying on Twitter…
Gutting end to the game but once again a perfect example of how to play without the ball. I never feel like we will concede. Could have been slightly better on the ball though. Boly was awesome . #wwfc

Our defensive shape and structure today was magnificent. Offensively I felt we probably could of showed a little more composure at times but that’s being super critical.
Coady, Boly and Saiss deserve special praise… some of the blocks they made were top drawer #wwfc

Well that is gutting. It’s a great strike by Hazard but we were superb today. Defensively outstanding. Boly was immense and Patricio was really solid when it mattered despite the late goal. Gives me hope that we can give Man United a game next week. #wwfc #CHEWOL #wolvesaywe

Great defensive display today.
Saiss, Boly, Coady and Dendoncker plus the wingbacks were superb today.
Someone start writing the cheque for Jimenez now!#WWFC
