Wolves’ starting 11 versus Crystal Palace on 6th October featured five Portuguese players, which is one more than the number who lined up in Sunday’s Primeira Liga match between Benfica and FC Porto.
The influx of Portuguese players to the Midlands club can largely be attributed to the involvement of super-agent Jorge Mendes, who played a key role in bringing midfielder Ruben Neves to Molineux in Summer 2017 for a Championship record fee.
The 21-year-old has got an assist to his name in the Premier League and was robbed of a fantastic one last night as he impressed against Poland for Portugal in the Nations League.
Neves received the ball just inside the defensive half, looked up and, spotting the run of his teammate into the penalty area, promptly launched a pinpoint long-ball which was brought down with equal perfection by Benfica midfielder Rafa Silva. Silva rounded the goalkeeper and was about to pull the trigger when Poland centre-back Kamil Glik inadvertently slid the ball home himself as he tried to recover.
How's your touch, Rafa? 💥
He gets on the end of Ruben Neves' pinpoint pass to round the 'keeper, only for Glik to knock it into his own net! ⚽

The former Porto man was denied one of the assists of the season, but nothing was to be taken away from his performance as his side ran out 3-2 winners. Wolves fans will hope that he can continue to produce such quality when he returns from international duty.

A reminder tonight, if ever we needed one, of the genius that is Ruben Neves. Europe’s elite will be all over him in the summer. But if we are to take Fosun’s ambitions seriously, we have no choice but to keep him. Sell him, and we lose credibility. #WWFC
