Wolverhampton Wanderers pulled off a stunning scalp this afternoon to bolster their chances of playing in Europe once again next season.
Nuno Santo’s side clinched all three points in a five-goal thriller against Tottenham Hotspur in north London, but supporters weren’t totally pleased by the performance from left wing-back Ruben Vinagre.
Spurs twice held the lead in the first half before Raul Jimenez popped up with the winner in the 73rd minute with a coolly slotted finish.
Wolves have now overtaken Jose Mourinho’s men into sixth place to go within three points of the top four.
Vinagre, who played the full 90 minutes in the absence of Jonny, was criticised by fans on social media.
Here’s what has been said…
That was a Doherty master class today, I won't hear any more slander against him when Vinagre is a liability on the left. #wwfc

There’s no overreaction at all 😴
Vinagre isn’t performing as well as he should be and as a result he’s cost us a goal. We have every right to be annoyed at him. Same goes for Doherty or any other player if they drop a stinker. https://t.co/flhlcku6rh

I think that nuno should take off vinagre and put someone like kilman on, because vinagre is scared of hiving away a foul #TOTWOL

Vinagre looking the most naive player on the park by a country mile 1st half.

Vinagre getting exposed today

Always rated vinagre , but he’s having a shocker today
— Steve Underhill (@WWFC_Warwick) March 1, 2020
Vinagre, total rubbish, most overrated player in Wolves history.
— Wolfgar (@WolfgarRichie) March 1, 2020
Yet we can't defend at all. Vinagre has been attrocious
— Simon (@wolvesfansi) March 1, 2020
We had the game at 1-1 after a poor start. Shocking defending by Vinagre. He has huge potential but very poor today.
Huge second half 👍🏽🐺

The Portuguese was described as a “liability” and as the “most overrated player in Wolves history” despite contributing towards this outstanding victory.
As per SofaScore, Vinagre failed to provide an accurate cross, lost possession 20 times, recorded six tackles and managed a dribble success rate of just 25%.
Which is why some fans blasted his performance for being “atrocious,” “shocking” and “naive.”
It was only his fourth start of the Premier League season.
Plenty of others specifically targetted his defending ability…
Vinagre can’t defend, doc can’t defend. facts.

Vinagre way out of his depth defensively today
— JL ◣ ◢ (@JoshLyons) March 1, 2020
Ruben Vinagre is not a defender #wwfc
— Jordan Rawles (@jaggirawles) March 1, 2020
Vinagre should not be defending at any point for us he’s a winger
— Cam (@CamWWFC1) March 1, 2020
Vinagre as not got a defensive brain, it's the last thing on his mind..
— Ian Butt (@IanButchio) March 1, 2020
Vinagre is a shocking defender…

Some saw his potential lying further up the field, but that’s unlikely to happen without an injury crisis as Nuno can call upon Pedro Neto, Diogo Jota and Daniel Podence on the left-hand side.
“Out of his depth” and “shocking” were two words used to describe Vinagre’s capability as a wing-back.
It has led to some members of the Wolf Pack opening stating that they miss the usual first-choice, Jonny, who picked up an injury against Norwich City just ten days ago.
Vinagre has been very poor missing Johnny badly.

Missing Jonny badly. Vinagre all over the place defensively.
— Gordon Thursfield (@St4fford_deWolf) March 1, 2020
All the people that call for Jonny RWB and Vinagre LWB have changed their tune today. #wwfc
— Jason (@JasonJ1987) March 1, 2020
I would rather have Jonny with one leg than Vinagre
— Jon Banks (@JBanks_Cake) March 1, 2020
One supporter even went as far as claiming he would rather have the Spaniard with one leg over Vinagre.
And in other news, Wolves can count their lucky stars for not signing this Jorge Mendes client…
